sweeteners, intense (sweeteners, non‐nutritive) Chemical substances that have no calorific value but are intensely sweet and so are useful as a replacement for sucrose in foods intended for diabetics and those on slimming regimes, but unlike bulk sweeteners (sugar alcohols) do not replace the bulk of sucrose.
