Sweet, Sharon, American soprano; b. N.Y., Aug. 16, 1951. She was a student at the Curtis Inst. of Music in Philadelphia and of Marinka Gurewich in N.Y Following appearances as a recitalist in Philadelphia, she sang Aida in a concert performance in Munich (1985). In 1986 she made her formal operatic debut as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser at the Dortmund Opera. In 1987 she joined the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, with which she toured Japan; also appeared as Elisabeth de Valois at the Paris Opéra and the Hamburg State Opera. Other engagements during the 1987-88 season included appearances at the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera. In 1989 she made her U.S. operatic debut as Aida at the San Francisco Opera, which role she also sang in Dallas in 1992. On Oct. 21, 1993, she sang Lina in the first staging of Verdi’s Stiffelio by the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y After appearing as Aida at London’s Covent Garden in 1995, she returned there as Turandot in 1997. She sang Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in 1997. She also toured as a concert artist. In 1999 she joined the faculty of Westminster Choir Coll.
