Sidelights
Vince Natale is a commercial and fine artist whose work has appeared in periodicals, on book covers, and in television advertising. He has also contributed to annual exhibits staged by the Society of Illustrators in both New York City and Los Angeles, California, as well as to the Spectrum annual exhibition of fantastic art. Working from a studio in northern New York State, Natale has developed a reputation among fans of science-fiction and fantasy art who appreciate his detailed, imaginative approach.
Natale's first book-length illustration project, Janice Del Negro's Passion and Poison: Tales of Shape-Shifters, Ghosts, and Spirited Women, provided him the opportunity to explore the horror genre. Reviewing the seven-story anthology, a Kirkus Reviews writer noted that "Natale's black-and-white illustrations are properly spectral and modestly elegant," while School Library
Journal contributor Shawn Brommer concluded of Passion and Poison that the images "add to the eerie mood" of a volume that "is sure to thrill all readers and listeners who appreciate spirited stories." Citing Del Negro's retelling of "The Severed Hand" in particular, Horn Book contributor Joanna Rudge Long wrote that "Natale's full-page art is appropriately equipped with fierce visages, looming shadows, and grasping hands."
