SIDELIGHTS: Lulu von Strauss und Torney was a German author whose publications include poetry collections and historical short stories and novels. These are typically set in the northwest region of Germany and often feature women characters. Born in Lower Saxony, the author first became published as a poet, writing lyrical verses and ballads, but she also released such early fiction works as Bauernstolz. Among her better-known novels is Der jüngste Tag, a critique of the extremist Anabaptists in Munich that is about a humble weaver who becomes a prophet, only to run afoul of his fellow citizens when he fails to alleviate their problems. The author is best remembered, though, for her ballad compositions, some of which are collected in such works as Reif steht die Saat: Neue Balladen.
