SIDELIGHTS:
Writer, researcher, and educator Henri Vogt was born August 7, 1967. He earned his doctorate degree from St. Anthony's College at the University of Oxford in 2001, and went on to work for a number of institutions in Helsinki, Finland. From 2000 to 2002, he was a researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, with an additional two years spent as a senior researcher. He then moved on to a faculty position at the University of Helsinki, joining the department of political science as a senior lecturer and later became an adjunct professor. At the university, he has also served as director of the Network for European Studies and as a researcher for the Centre of Excellence in Global Governance Research. In addition, Vogt has taught at a number of other universities, including Örebro, Umeå, Tallinn, and Humboldt. Vogt's primary areas of academic and research interest include the process of integrating Europe, particularly from the Eastern European perspective, global governance, and the overall democratization of Europe. He is the author of Between Utopia and Disillusionment: A Narrative of the Political Transformation in Eastern Europe, and he edited A Responsible Europe? Ethical Foundations of EU External Affairs, with Hartmut Mayer.
In Between Utopia and Disillusionment, Vogt takes a twenty-first century look at the changes in Eastern Europe since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989. While many texts were written about the necessary political, economic, and social adjustments that resulted in the wake of the Soviet Union's collapse in the immediate aftermath of the events of 1989, Vogt has the advantage of perspective, as well as the additional influences of the shifts in Western Europe to take into consideration. He discusses the various consequences of the reshaping of the Eastern European nations, including the turmoil that followed their separation from Russia and the internal strife that upended many of their own political frameworks. Vogt also discusses the events that led up to the Soviet Union's demise. Regarding the economic and social conditions of the former Soviet Bloc, Vogt addresses the rise in prosperity in Eastern Europe and the influx of Western ideas and luxuries. Imre Szeman, in a review for Utopian Studies, remarked that "in addition to what it tells us about the political transformations of 1989, Vogt's book draws attention to the need for scholars to see the future as perpetually open and alive to change." Szeman concluded: "Those of us who hope for different futures can only welcome a book that takes seriously the intimate relationship between everyday utopias and the possibility of political change."
