Vogler, Carl
Vogler, Carl, Swiss organist, conductor, pedagogue, and composer; b. Oberrohrdorf, Feb. 26,1874; d. Zürich, June 17, 1951. He was a pupil of Breitenbach at the Lucern Organistenschule (1891-93), of Hegar and Kempter at the Zürich Music School (1893-95), and of Rheinberger at the Munich Cons. (1895-97). From 1897 to 1919 he was an organist and music teacher in Baden in Aargau, and also was founder-director of the Gemischter Chor and the Musikkollegium. He taught counterpoint at the Zürich Cons, from 1915, where he was co-director (1919-39) and director (1939-45). From 1907 to 1932 he was president of the Musikpädagogischer Verband, and also of the Schweizerischer Tonkünstlerverein from 1931 to 1941. In 1924 he founded the Gesellschaft für Aufführungsrechte, serving as its president until his death. He ed. the book Der Schweizerische Tonkünstlerverein (Zürich, 1925) and publ. the study Der Schweizer Musiker und seine Berufsbildung (Zürich, 1942). His music, which included Mutter Sybille,Singspiel (1906), Rübezsahl,Märchenspiel (1917), Friedelhänschen,Märchenspiel (1924), choral music, songs, and organ pieces, followed mainly the precepts of late Romanticism.
