TURNER, Thomas B(ourne) 1902-2002

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born January 28, 1902, in Prince Frederick, MD; died September 22, 2002, in Baltimore, MD. Physician, administrator, and author. Turner, who spent much of his career studying infectious diseases, was a microbiologist and former dean of the Medical School at Johns Hopkins University. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1921 from St. John's College in Annapolis and his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1925. From early on he was interested in the study of infectious diseases, and he spent several years in the Caribbean doing research. When he returned to America, he continued this work at the Rockefeller Foundation's International Health Division during the 1930s. In 1939 Turner joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins as a professor of microbiology. His university work was interrupted by World War II, during which he spearheaded the U.S. Army's efforts to control the spread of syphilis and championed the use of prophylaxis to prevent transmittal of sexual diseases among the troops. Returning to Johns Hopkins after the war, Turner served as dean from 1957 to 1968, when he became the first person to work as the medical archivist there. He retired as professor and dean emeritus in 1971, but he continued his work as archivist until 1981, and during the 1980s was the director of the Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation. A prolific author of scholarly papers, Turner also wrote or edited several books, including Fundamentals of Medical Education (1963), Heritage of Excellence: The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, 1914-1947 (1974), the 1981 autobiography Art of Medicine, Art of Me: Musings of a Johns Hopkins Dean, and his last book, written with V. L. Bennett, Forward Together: Industry and Academia (1993). For his contributions to science, Turner received an honorary L.H.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1991, among other awards.
