OTHER

Tibo's books have been translated and published in Sweden, Norway, Africa, Australia, and Japan. The Canadian National Library holds the original paintings for the first book in the Simon series.

SIDELIGHTS: Gilles Tibo taught himself to draw and published his first work when he was only seventeen years old. He has written and illustrated books and provided drawings for newspapers, magazines, record albums, and movie posters.

Tibo's book The Cowboy Kid, originally published as L'enfant cow-boy, is a surreal story in which a nameless boy, called the Cowboy Kid by those he meets, frees horses found in paintings, on carousels, and carved into statues so that they may roam the night sky. Louise L. Sherman, in the School Library Journal, found that the "dreamlike tale has neither substance nor narrative completeness." But Marta Segal in Booklist believed that "if the book isn't particularly strong on plot, the writing is lovely."

The Grand Journey of Mr. Man, first published as Le grand voyage de monsieur, begins with the opening sentence, "After the death of his child, Mr. Man left everything behind." Tibo's protagonist wanders the devastated landscape of a wartorn country, carrying with him a chair and his dead son's teddy bear. When he finally reaches the end of the world, Mr. Man meets a young boy who is also carrying a chair and a toy doll. The two grieving travelers continue their journey together. As Rosalyn Pierini noted in the School Library Journal, "readers are left to wonder if the pictures and text are a commentary on the grieving process, the hopelessness of the human condition, or the devastation of war."
