SIDELIGHTS: D. K. Holland told CA: "I write almost exclusively on the subject of design, meaning graphic design. There has been very little written about design, particularly about the contemporary design in modern society. Design is also very ubiquitous: everyone is exposed to it, but few people actually understand its impact or appreciate its power. Since design is in a state of constant flux, it's fascinating to see what aspects of design are providing the greatest opportunities for innovation and where the inspiration for design comes from.
"I never write from an outline. I only start at the beginning and work toward the end. Thank God for the computer!
"I write purely to communicate clearly and hopefully to create an impact (often with an ethical component) about the subject I've chosen. I was influenced in my early days by the writing of my sister, Cecelia Holland, writing which is very direct and unembellished—two attributes I strive to maintain in my style."
