Hollaender, Gustav, German violinist, pedagogue, and composer, brother of Viktor Hollaender; b. Leobschütz, Silesia, Feb. 15, 1855; d. Berlin, Dec. 4, 1915. He studied violin with his father, and then with David at the Leipzig Cons. Later he was a student of Joachim (violin) and Kiel (composition) at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. He began his concert career at age 20, and after serving as concertmaster of the Gürzenich Orch. and as a teacher at the Cons, in Cologne (1881–84), he settled in Berlin as a royal chamber musician of the court opera orch. in 1884. He was head of the violin dept. at the Kullak Academy (from 1885), and then was director of the Stern Cons, (from 1894). He wrote principally solo violin pieces, in an effective virtuoso style. Among his other works were 3 violin concertos, cello pieces, and vocal duets.
