SIDELIGHTS:

As both a "name" author and a ghost writer, Barry Fox has written a celebrity biography on the tragically shortened romance between Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed, numerous self-help and inspirational treatises, and books on a wide variety of health topics, including diet, the immune system, and afflictions such as cancer, arthritis, and hypertension. He is a popular speaker on the lecture circuit. He is also a professor at the University of Integrative Studies, based in Sonora, California and chair of the Consumer Advisory Council for the American Nutraceutical Association, a clearinghouse for information on healthy eating and the health effects of supplements. With his wife, Nadine Taylor, a trained dietitian, he specializes in bringing current health information to the public in books, articles, and lectures.

One of his popular books has been The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Halt, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis, written with Brenda Adderly and Dr. Jason Theodosakis, an assistant clinical professor at the University of Arizona. Together, the authors recommend an eight-step program including a healthy "joint-building" diet, exercise, maintaining ideal weight, and the careful use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates. Some reviewers were skeptical of the advice provided, however. Writing in Nutrition Forum, Manfred Kroger predicted, "Like dozens of other books promising simple cures of complicated and perplexing diseases, this book will most likely end up as a remaindered publisher's venture.…And years from now, arthritis will still be with us." But other reviewers were more impressed. "The authors, in a clearly illustrated and well-written text, command attention with their research and that of others," wrote USA Today contributor Gerald F. Kreyche. Fox, along with Taylor, more recently produced Arthritis for Dummies, a "clearly written and simply illustrated guide" to various arthritis treatments and strategies, according to a Library Journal reviewer.

In addition to arthritis, Fox has coauthored a number of books on a the considerably more devastating disease of cancer. One of these is Cancer Talk: Voices of Hope and Endurance from "The Group Room," the World's Largest Cancer Support Group, written with Selma Schimmel. Herself a longtime cancer survivor, Schimmel founded Vital Options, a support group for young people with cancer, which eventually turned into the Group Room, a radio program on NPR and the world's largest Internet support group to empower cancer patients to take an active role in their treatments rather than see themselves as victims. Issues such as caring for a young child with cancer and dealing with survivor guilt are covered, and there is a great deal of information on the side effects of various treatments, from both experts and forum participants. According to a Publishers Weekly reviewer, the book provides a "well-needed, sensitive approach" to treatments and policies, but the real value lies in "the voices of the people affected by cancer who provide hope instead of hopelessness." "Each chapter ends by helpfully summarizing major points, and the book concludes with a long list of support and advocacy organizations," noted Booklist contributor William Beatty.

Along with Arnold Fox, the author also completed The Healthy Prostate: A Doctor's Comprehensive Program for Preventing and Treating Common Problems. In addition to providing medical information, the Foxes also give advice on effective communication strategies for both doctors and patients and provide alternative treatment options. Booklist reviewer Mike Tribby found it, "Easy to use and comprehend." The Foxes also teamed up to write Immune for Life: Live Longer and Better by Strengthening Your "Doctor Within." In addition to handy advice about diet and exercise, the book provides an "Outlook on Life Test" and a comprehensive "Nutrition Quiz." Library Journal reviewer Allayne Heyduk stated that although there was "nothing new here … [the authors] present it in a nice package."
