PERSONAL: Born October 20, 1943, in Mackenzie, Guyana; son of Paul Mortimer (a manager) and Jean Melville (a teacher; maiden name, Tudhope) Fenton; married Eleanor Ruth Feely (a librarian), May 10, 1969. Education: Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, B.Sc. (with honors), 1965; University of Toronto, M.Sc., 1967, Ph.D., 1969.
