In Necessary Sins: A Memoir, former reporter Lynn Darling provides the story of her affair with, and marriage to, foreign correspondent Lee A. Lescaze. They met while both were on the staff of the Washington Post, and their affair ultimately cost him his job and resulted in her demotion. Lescaze, nearly twice her age, was married and had three children, and he eventually divorced his wife to marry Darling. She writes of her relationship with his children, the death of one of Lescaze's sons, and the birth of their daughter, Zoe. The couple faced their greatest challenge when Lescaze was diagnosed with fatal cancer five years after Zoe's birth.
