Ward, John M(ilton)
Ward, John M(ilton) American musicologist; b. Oakland, Calif., July 6, 1917. He studied at San Francisco State Coll. (B.A., 1941), the Univ. of Wash. (M.M., 1942), with Milhaud (composition, 1943-44), and at N.Y.U. (Ph.D., 1953, with the diss. The Vihuela de Mano and Its Music (1536-1576). He taught at Mich. State Univ. (1947-53), the Univ. of 111. (1953-55), and at Harvard Univ. (1955-85). He ed. The Dublin Virginal Manuscript, Wellesley Edition, III (1954; 2nd ed., rev. and aug., 1964; new ed., 1983) and Music for Elizabethan Lutes (2 vols., Oxford, 1992), and also contributed numerous essays and specialized articles to various scholarly music magazines.
