Serauky, Walter (Karl-August)
Serauky, Walter (Karl-August), eminent German musicologist; b. Halle, April 20, 1903; d. there, Aug. 20, 1959. He studied musicology in Halle and with Schering at the Univ. of Leipzig (Ph.D., 1929, with the diss. Die musikalische Nachahmungsästhetik im Zeitraum von 1700 bis 1850; pubi, in Münster, 1929); completed his Habilitation in 1932 at the Univ. of Halle, where he subsequently served as a prof. (from 1940); then was director of the musicological inst. at the Univ. of Leipzig (from 1949), which post he shared with Besseler (from 1956). He contributed valuable essays to various German publications; also pubi. Samuel Scheldt in seinen Briefen (Halle, 1937) and G.F. Händel: Sein Leben, sein Werk (Kassel and Leipzig, 1956–58).
