Scholium, Robert

Scholium, Robert, Austrian composer, writer on music, and teacher; b. Vienna, Aug. 22, 1913; d. there, Sept. 30, 1987. He was a student at the Vienna Academy of Music and at the New Vienna Cons. He also received training from Marx and Lustgarten (theory and composition), Lafite (piano and organ), and Nilius (conducting). From 1959 to 1982 he taught voice at the Vienna Academy of Music. He was president of the Austrian Composers Union from 1965 to 1970, and again in 1983. In 1961 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for composition and in 1971 the prize of the City of Vienna. After World War II, the influence of impressionism on his music was replaced by dodecaphony, aleatory, and timbre display.
