Niyazi (real name, Taghi-zade-Khadzhibekov)
Niyazi (real name, Taghi-zade-Khadzhibekov), Russian conductor and composer; b. Tiflis, Aug. 20, 1912; d. Baku, Aug. 2, 1984. His father was the composer Zulfugar Khadzhibekov. He studied music in Moscow, Yerevan, and Baku. From 1937 to 1965 he served, off and on, as conductor of the Azerbaijani Ballet. In 1961 he was named principal conductor of the Leningrad Theater of Opera and Ballet. He conducted a number of first performances of works by Azerbaijani composers. Among his works are Hosrov and Shirin, opera (1942), Chitra, ballet, after Rabindranath Tagore (1961), In Combat, symphonic poem (1944), popular concert pieces, and songs.
