McAllester, David P(ark)

McAllester, David P(ark) , American ethnomu-sicologist; b. Everett, Mass., Aug. 6, 1916. He studied anthropology at Harvard Univ. (B.A., 1934) and Columbia Univ. (Ph.D., 1939). He taught anthropology at Wesleyan Univ. from 1947, and from 1972 until his retirement in 1986 he served as prof, of anthropology and music there. He devoted much time to the study of American Indian culture.

Peyote Music (N.Y., 1949); Enemy Way Music (Cambridge, Mass., 1954); The Myth and Prayers of the Great Star Chant (Santa Fe, N.Mex., 1956); ed. Readings in Ethnomusicology (N.Y., 1971); with S. McAllester, Hogans: Navajo Houses and House Songs (Middletown, Conn., 1980).
