Maresch, Johann Anton(real name, Jan Antonín Mareš)
Maresch, Johann Anton(real name, Jan Antonín Mareš), Bohemian horn player, cellist, and composer; b. Chotěboř, 1719; d. St. Petersburg, June 10,1794. Following training in Chotěboř and Prague, he studied in Dresden with Hampel (horn) and Zyka (cello). In 1748 he settled in St. Petersburg as horn player in the private orch. of the Russian Grand Chancellor A.P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin. In 1752 he became horn player in the imperial court orch., where he subsequently was second cellist from 1774 to 1792. In 1752 he founded his own hunting-horn ensemble. In 1757 he was made director of the imperial hunting band, which he reorganized. He composed 3- and 4-part works for his groups, but they are not extant.
