López-Chavarri y Marco, Eduardo
López-Chavarri y Marco, Eduardo, Spanish musicologist, music critic, and composer; b. Valencia, Jan. 29, 1871; d. there, Oct. 28, 1970. He received a law degree from the Univ. of Valencia (1900) and studied composition with Pedrell. In 1897 he became music critic of Las provindas in Valencia, a position he retained until shortly before his death. He also was prof. of aesthetics and music history at the Valencia Cons. (1910–21), where he conducted its orch. and chamber orch. His most important writings were Historia de la música(Barcelona, 1914; 3rd ed., 1929) and Música popular española (Barcelona, 1927; 3rd ed., 1958). He composed orch. works, choral pieces, chamber music, piano pieces, and songs.
