Longy, (Gustave-) Georges (-Léopold)
Longy, (Gustave-) Georges (-Léopold), French oboist, conductor, music educator, and composer; b. Abbeville, Aug. 28,1868; d. Moreuil, March 29, 1930. He studied oboe with Georges Gillet at the Paris Cons, (premier prix, 1886). He was a member of the Lamoureux Orch. (1886–88) and of the Colonne Orch. (1888–98) in Paris. In 1898 he was engaged as first oboe player of the Boston Sym. Orch., and remained there until 1925. From 1899 to 1913 he conducted the Boston Orchestral Club. In 1916 he established his own music school in Boston (later the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass.). In 1925 he returned to France.
