Laubenthal (real name, Neumann), Horst (Rüdiger)

Laubenthal (real name, Neumann), Horst (Rüdiger), German tenor; b. Duderstadt, March 8, 1939. He began his studies in Munich and continued his training with Rudolf Laubenthal , whose surname he took as his own for his professional career. In 1967 he made his operatic debut as Don Ottavio at the Würzburg Festival, and then was a member of the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart from 1968 to 1973. In 1970 he appeared as the Steersman in Der fliegende Holländer at the Bayreuth Festival, and in 1972 sang Belmonte at the Glyndebourne Festival. In 1973 he became a member of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. His guest engagements took him to the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Hamburg State Opera, the Paris Opéra, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, and other music centers. He was especially successful for his roles in Mozart’s operas, and was particularly noted for his work as a concert artist.
