Kozlovsky, Ivan (Semyonovich)

Kozlovsky, Ivan (Semyonovich), Russian tenor; b. Maryanovka, near Kiev, March 24, 1900; d. Moscow, Dec. 21, 1993. He studied at the Kiev Cons, with Lysenko and Muravyova. He made his operatic debut as Faust in Poltava in 1918, then sang in Kharkov (1924) and Sverdlovsk (1925). In 1926 he joined the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, where he was one of the leading singers until 1954. An artist of imaginative power, Kozlovsky expanded his activities into stage direction, striving to synthesize dramatic action with its musical realization. Apart from operatic performances, he gave recitals in programs of the classical repertoire as well as Russian and Ukrainian songs.
