Kozina, Marjan, Slovenian composer and teacher; b. Novo Mesto, June 4, 1907; d. there, June 19, 1966. He studied mathematics at the Univ. and music at the Cons. (1925–27) in Ljubljana, and then was a student of Marx at the Vienna Academy of Music (1927–30) and of Suk at the Prague Cons. (1930–32); he also studied conducting with Malko. He was conductor and director of the music school Maribor Glasbena Matica (1934–39), and then taught at the Belgrade Academy of Music (1939–43). During the Nazi occupation, he took part in the armed resistance movement. After the liberation, he served as director of the Slovene Phil. (1947–50) before teaching composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music (1950–60). His finely executed scores made circumspect use of modern harmonies, while deriving their melorhythmic essence from native Slovenian folk song patterns. Among his works were the opera Ekvinokcij (Equinox; Ljubljana, May 2, 1946); ballets; orch. music; choral pieces; songs.
