Kelly, (Edgar) Guy
Kelly, (Edgar) Guy, early jazz trumpeter, singer; b. Scotlandville, La., Nov. 22, 1906; d. Chicago, Feb. 24, 1940. He played with the “Toots” Johnson Band in Baton Rouge, then toured Tex. before settling in New Orleans. He worked with Papa Celestin in 1927 and 1928 (including a residency in Mobile). In 1929 he began touring with Kid Howard’s Band, then left to live in Chicago. Through the 1930s, he played with various leaders in Chicago including Erskine Tate (1931-32; again early 1938), Carroll Dickerson (1934; again 1937-38), and Albert Ammons (1935-36, and again in 1939 until his death).
