Kârpâti, Jânos, distinguished Hungarian musicologist; b. Budapest, July 11, 1932. He studied musicol-ogy with Kodâly, Szabolcsi, and Bartha at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, then was an ed. with the music dept. of the Hungarian Radio (1957–59) and music producer with the Hungaroton Record Co. (1959–61). In 1961 he was named chief librarian of the Liszt Academy. He obtained his degree of Candidate of Sciences in 1968 and his Ph.D. in 1969 with the diss. Bartók vonósnegyesi (publ. in Budapest, 1967; rev. ed., 1976, as Bartók’ kamarazenéje; Eng. tr., 1975, as Bartók’s String Quartets; rev. and aug. ed., 1993, as Bartók’s Chamber Music). His books include Domenico Scarlatti (Budapest, 1959); Arnold Schönberg (Budapest, 1963); Kelet zenéje (Music of the Orient; Budapest, 1981). He compiled the 2nd and 4th vols, for an encyclopedic ed., Muzsikaló zenetò’rténet (History of Music). In 1981 he was guest lecturer at Harvard Univ. In 1982 he was a delegate at the Bartók Memorial Conference in Bloomington, Ind., and in 1983 was a guest lecturer at the Univ. of Calif, at Los Angeles, at North Tex. State Univ. in Denton, and at the Univ. of Tex. in Austin.
