Kallenberg, Siegfried Garibaldi

Kallenberg, Siegfried Garibaldi, German composer; b. Bad Schachen, near Lindau, Nov. 3, 1867; d. Munich, Feb. 9, 1944. He studied with Faisst at the Stuttgart Cons, and at the Munich Academy of Music. He became director of the Stettin Cons. (1892), and later taught in Königsberg, Hannover, and Munich (from 1910). He publ. Musikalische Kompositionsformen (Leipzig, 1913) and monographs on R. Strauss (Leipzig, 1926) and Reger (Leipzig, 1930). As a composer, he was inspired by neo-Romanticism; in some of his works there are touches of Impressionism; in others, his absorption in symbolic subjects brought him into a kinship with the Expressionist school in Germany. Apart from works on exotic subjects, he wrote music in a traditional style; he was particularly strong in choral polyphony.
