Hopkins (real name, Reynolds), Antony
Hopkins (real name, Reynolds), Antony English pianist, conductor, broadcaster, writer on music, and composer; b. London, March 21, 1921. He was a pupil of Cyril Scott and Gordon Jacob at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1939–42). He then served as music director of the Intimate Opera Co. (1952–64), for which he composed several scores. He also wrote music for films, radio, and the theater, and was active as a radio broadcaster, hosting the series “Talking about Music” (1954–92). His books include Understanding Music (1979), The Nine Symphonies of Beethoven (1980), The Concertgoer’s Companion (2 vols., 1984, 1986), Sounds of the Orchestra (1993), and The Seven Concertos of Beethoven (1996). In 1976 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
