Hopkins, Edward (John)
Hopkins, Edward (John), English organist, choirmaster, writer on music, and composer; b. London, June 30, 1818; d. there, Feb. 4, 1901. He was a pupil of T. F. Walmisley. After serving as organist at Mitcham Church (1834–38), St. Peter’s, Islington (1838–41), and St. Luke’s (1841–3), he won distinction as organist and choirmaster at the Temple Church (1843–98). His output included many anthems and services. With E. Rimbault, he publ, the important vol. The Organ: Its History and Construction (London, 1855; 3rd ed., aug., 1877).
