Hogarth, George
Hogarth, George, Scottish writer on music; b. Carfrae Mill, near Oxton, Berwickshire, 1783; d. London, Feb. 12, 1870. He was a practicing lawyer in Edinburgh, and an amateur musician. He settled in London in 1830. He contributed articles to the Harmoni-con, and also wrote reviews for the Morning Chronicle. His daughter married Charles Dickens in 1836. When Dickens became ed. of the Daily News (1846), Hogarth began writing music criticism for it; also wrote for other newspapers. From 1850 to 1864 he was secretary to the Phil. Soc. of London.
