Hill, Ralph, English writer on music; b. Watford, Oct. 8, 1900; d. London, Oct. 19, 1950. He studied cello with his father at the Guildhall School of Music in London. He was active in music publishing (1920-29). He was music ed. of the Radio Times (1933-45) and also asst. music critic (1933-39) and later chief music critic (1945-50) of the Daily Mail He publ, the following works, all in London: An Outline of Musical History (1929), Brahms: A Study in Musical Biography (1933), Liszt (1936; 2nd ed., 1949), Challenges: A Series of Controversial Essays on Music (1943), Music without Fears (1945), and Prelude to Music (1951). He also ed. The Symphony (1949) and The Concerto (1952).
