Harrer, (Johann) Gottlob
Harrer, (Johann) Gottlob, German composer; b. Görlitz, May 8, 1703; d. Carlsbad, July 9, 1755. He studied law at the Univ. of Leipzig (1722–25), and then was sent to Italy to study music by Count Heinrich von Brühl. In 1731 he entered the count’s service in Dresden. In 1750 he was made Bach’s successor as the Leipzig Thomaskantor. Among his extensive output were Passions, oratorios, church music, many syms., and chamber music.
