Grua, Franz Paul, (Francesco da Paula or Paolo)
Grua, Franz Paul, (Francesco da Paula or Paolo), German composer of Italian descent, son of Carlo (Alisio) Pietro Grua; b. Mannheim (baptized), Feb. 1, 1753; d. Munich, July 5, 1833. He was a pupil of I. Fränzl (violin) and Holzbauer (composition) in Mannheim, where he became deputy violinist at the court of the elector Palatine in 1776. After further training with Padre Martini in Bologna (1777), he accompanied the Mannheim musical establishment in its relocation to Munich in 1778, where he was made vice-Kapellmeister in 1779 and Hofkapellmeister in 1784. He wrote the opera Telemaco (Munich, Carnival 1780) and much sacred music.
