Green, Elizabeth A(dine) H(erkimer)

Green, Elizabeth A(dine) H(erkimer) , American string and conducting pedagogue; b. Mobile, Ala., Aug. 21, 1906; d. Ann Arbor, Sept. 24, 1995. She began violin lessons at age 4 with her father, Albert Wingate Green, then studied at Wheaton (111.) Coll. (Mus.B., 1924; B.S., 1928). She had advanced training with Clarence Evans (viola) in Chicago and Jacques Gordon (violin) in Falls Village, Conn., and then pur-sued her education at Northwestern Univ. (M.Mus., 1939). She later received instruction in conducting from Malko in Chicago (1940-42), and completed violin studies with Galamian at the Meadowmount School in N.Y. (summers, 1948-53; 1955-56); still later she studied at Eastern Mich. Univ. (B.F.A., 1978). She taught at East H.S. in Waterloo, Iowa (1928-42), and also played in the Waterloo Sym. Orch. From 1942 to 1954 she taught in the Ann Arbor (Mich.) public schools, then at the Univ. of Mich., retiring in 1974. She became well-known as a teacher of string instruments and of conducting, and appeared as a conductor of various ensembles in the U.S. She publ. the widely consulted textbook The Modern Conductor (1961; 6th ed., 1997).
