Gilibert, Charles
Gilibert, Charles, French baritone; b. Paris, Nov. 29, 1866; d. N.Y., Oct. 11, 1910. He studied at the Paris Cons. After making his operatic debut at the Paris Opéra-Comique in 1888, he sang in Brussels at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (from 1889) and at London’s Covent Garden (1894-1909). On Nov. 9, 1900, he made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera as Schaunard during the company’s visit to Los Angeles. His formal debut with the company in N.Y. followed on Dec. 18, 1900, as the Duke of Verona, and he remained with the company until 1903. He then appeared at the Manhattan Opera House (1906-10). Among his other roles were Mozart’s and Rossini’s Bartolo, Masetto, Don Pasquale, and Monterone.
