Gérardy, Jean, Belgian cellist; b. Spa, Dec. 6, 1877;d. there, July 4, 1929. At the age of 5 he began to study cello with R. Bellmann, and then was a pupil of Alfred Massau at the Liege Cons, from 1885 to 1889. In 1888 he played as a student in a trio with Ysaÿe and Paderewski, becoming a noted ensemble player. With Ysaÿe and Godowsky, he formed a trio and toured the U.S. in 1913–14. Gérardy’s instrument was a Stradivari made in 1710.
