Fogliani (Fogliano), Ludovico

Fogliani (Fogliano), Ludovico, Italian music theorist, brother of Giacomo Fogliani (Fogliano); b. Modena, 2nd half of the 15th century; d. there, 1538. He was famous for his book Musica theorica… (Venice, 1529; modern facsimile ed., Bologna, 1970), in which he preceded Zarlino in declaring the correct proportion of the major third to be 4:5, and in distinguishing between the major and minor (greater and lesser) semitones. In Petrucci’s Frottole (1504–08) are some specimens of his compositions.
