Foggia, Francesco

Foggia, Francesco, Italian composer; b. Rome, 1604; d. there, Jan. 8, 1688. He was a pupil of A. Cifra and P. Agostini;. After serving at several German courts, he returned to Rome, where he maestro di cappella at the Lateran (1636–61), at S. Lorenzo in Damaso (1661), and, from 1677, at S. Maria Maggiore. A prolific and masterly composer, he continued the traditions of the Roman School. He wrote the oratorios David fugiens a facie Saul and San Giovanni Battista (1670), numerous masses a cappella (also a few with organ), litanies, motets, etc.
