Fedorov, Vladimir (Mikhailovich)
Fedorov, Vladimir (Mikhailovich), Russian-born French music librarian, scholar, and composer; b. near Chernigov, Aug. 18, 1901; d. Paris, April 9, 1979. After training at the Univ. of Rostov, he settled in Paris and studied with Gédalge (counterpoint and fugue) and Vidal (composition) at the Cons. (1921–30), and with Pirro (musicology) at the Sorbonne (1921–32). He was librarian at the Sorbonne (1933–39), and then was head of the music division of the Bibliothéque Nationale (1946–66); he also was librarian at the Cons. (1958–64). In 1951 he founded the International Assn. of Music Libraries (IAML), serving as its vice president (1955–62) and president (1962–65), and as ed. of its journal, Fontes Artis Musicae (1954–75). He publ. a biography of Mussorgsky (Paris, 1935) and was one of the eds. of the Encyclopedic de la Musique (3 vols., Paris, 1958–61). Among his compositions were chamber music and piano pieces.
