Engelmann, Georg
Engelmann, Georg, German organist and composer; b. Mansfeld, near Eisleben, c. 1575; d. Leipzig (buried), Nov. 11, 1632. He went to Leipzig, where he matriculated at the Univ. in 1593. About 1596 he was made organist at St. Pauli, the Univ. church, and later was its music director. From 1625 he also served as organist at the Thomaskirche. He excelled as a composer of dances, mainly pavans and galliards, which he publ. in three vols. (Leipzig, 1616, 1617, 1622). His motets are also of interest. His son, also named Georg Engelmann (b. Leipzig, c. 1602; d. there, Sept. 1, 1663), was an organist and composer. After matriculating at the Univ. of Leipzig (1618), he succeeded his father as organist at the Thomaskirche in 1632. In 1659 he was removed from his post for excessive drinking, and spent his last days in poverty.
