Bellermann, Johann Friedrich

Bellermann, Johann Friedrich, German musk scholar, father of (Johann Gottfried) Heinrich Bellermann; b. Erfurt, March 8, 1795; d. Berlin, Feb. 5, 1874.He dedicated himself mainly to the study of ancient Greek music, his chief work being Die Tonleitern und Musikno-ten der Griechen, explanatory of the Greek system of notation (Berlin, 1847). He further wrote Die alten Lied-erbücher der Portugiesen (Berlin, 1840) and Die Hymnen des Dionysios und Mesomedes (Berlin, 1840), and ed. essays by authors of classical antiquity: Anonymi scriptio de musica, Bacchü senioris introductio artis musicae (Berlin, 1841); also ed. Fragmentum graecae scriptionis de musica (Berlin, 1840).
