Andrésen, Ivar
Andrésen, Ivar, Norwegian bass; b. Christiania, July 27, 1896; d. Stockholm, Nov. 25, 1940. He studied at the Royal Opera School in Stockholm. He made his operatic debut in Stockholm in 1919 as the King in Aida. From 1925 to 1934 he was a member of the Dresden State Opera, and also appeared at the Bayreuth Festivals (1927–36) and at London’s Covent Garden (1928–31). On Nov. 1, 1930, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Daland, continuing on its roster until 1932. From 1934 to 1936 he sang at the Berlin State Opera, and in 1935 appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival. His success in Germany led to his being made a Kammersànger. Although principally known as a Wagnerian, he also sang such roles as Sarastro and Osmin to great effect.
