Maric, Ljubica (1909—)
Serbian conductor and composer who fought as a partisan during WWII . Born in Kragujevac, Serbia, on March 18, 1909.
Ljubica Maric studied under J. Slavenski at the Music School in Belgrade from 1929 until the early 1930s. She then went to the Prague Conservatory where she studied with Josef Suk and Alois Haba. Nikolai Malko taught her conducting in Prague, and Hermann Scherchen instructed her in Strasbourg. World War II erupted shortly after Maric completed her musical studies; like many young people, she soon found herself fighting against the Nazis with the partisans. When the war ended, Maric began teaching and in 1957 came to the Music Academy of Belgrade.
