Marichal, Juan (1937–)

A native of Laguna Verde, the right-handed pitcher Juan Marichal, the "Dominican Dandy," was known for his high leg kick, pinpoint control, and such intimidating tactics as head-high, brush-back pitches and aggressive base running. Pitching primarily for the San Francisco Giants, he finished his sixteen-season career (1960–1975) with 243 victories, 142 losses, 244 complete games, 2,303 strikeouts, and a 2.89 earned run average over 3,507 innings. His image was marred when he attacked Dodger catcher John Roseboro in the head with a bat. Still, he was named to nine All-Star teams and elected to the Hall of Fame (1983). He later served as the Dominican Republic's minister of sports and also was a radio announcer.
