A successful model before breaking into movies, actress Anna Karina first appeared in a Danish short that won a prize at the Cannes Festival. She was launched into French films by New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard, who starred her in Le Petit Soldat, a disturbing, graphic film about the Algerian conflict that was not released until 1976. Karina married Godard in 1961 and that year also played the lead in the director's most charming film, Une Femme est une Femme (A Woman is a Woman, 1961), about a stripper who wants to settle down and have a baby. Karina also appeared in Godard's Vivre sa Vie (My Life to Live), a gloomy Brechtian film in which she portrayed a Paris prostitute. By the time the couple divorced (in either 1964 or 1967), Karina's career was well established. She made other French New Wave films and, in 1973, wrote, directed and starred in Vivre Ensemble. Karina later married director Daniel-Georges Duval.
