Duchess of Burgundy. Name variations: Isabel of Portugal. Born on February 21, 1397, in Evora; died on December 17, 1471 (some sources cite 1472 or 1473), in Nieppe; interred in Dijon; daughter of Joao I also known as John I of Aviz (1357–1433), king of Portugal (sometimes called the Bastard and the Great, r. 1385–1433) and Philippa of Lancaster (1359–1415, who was the daughter of John of Gaunt); sister of Prince Henry the Navigator and Edward I, king of Spain; became third wife of Philip the Good (1396–1467), duke of Burgundy (r. 1419–1467), on January 10, 1430; children: Charles the Bold (1433–1477), duke of Burgundy (r. 1467–1477). Philip the Good's first wife was Michelle Valois (1394–1422); his second wife was Bonne of Artois (d. 1425).
Isabella of Portugal was born in Evora in 1397, the daughter of John I of Aviz, king of Portugal, and Philippa of Lancaster . Through the patronage of Isabella, the exiled Portuguese established a foothold in the Burgundian court of her husband Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy.
