German stage and screen actress. Born Jan 3, 1908, in Davos, Switzerland; died Feb 20, 1986, in Berlin, Germany.
Trained with Max Reinhardt; became a leading star of the German stage; came to international prominence as Fräulein von Bernburg in film Mädchen in Uniform (1931); other films include Gräfin Mariza (title role), Trenck, Ein Toller Einfall, Anna und Elisabeth, Miss Fane's Baby is Stolen, Der student von Prag, Liselotte von der Pfalz (as Mme de Maintenon), Liebe kann lügen, Die gelbe flagge, Herz der Welt, Anastasia, A Time to Love and a Time to Die, and Die Schachnovelle; became a baroness on marriage.
