Pollard, Marjorie (1899–1982)

English hockey player and sports journalist . Born in 1899; died in 1982.

During an impressive career that spanned 15 years (1921–36), English (field) hockey star Marjorie Pollard played for the Midlands, Northants, and Peterborough teams, and was recognized as a top goal maker. In 1926, she scored 13 goals against Wales in a 20–0 win; she scored all 8 goals in another shutout against Germany, as well as 5 against Scotland, 7 against Ireland, and 5 against South Africa in other years. For some time, Pollard served as acting president of the All-England Women's Hockey Association. She also played cricket and was a founding member of the England Women's Cricket Association. From 1926 on, Pollard was employed as a sports journalist, writing for such leading newspapers as The Times, The Guardian, and the Morning Press. From 1946 to 1970, she served as editor of the journal Hockey Field.
