Member of the Volkskammer of the GDR (1990) and the German Bundestag (1990); served as federal vice-chair of the PDS (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus, 1993–2000); representing the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL), elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004).
