Hockfield, Susan (1951–)

American neuroscientist. Born 1951 in Chicago, Illinois; dau. of Fayetta and Robert Hockfield (electrical engineer); education: University of Rochester, BS, 1973; Georgetown University School of Medicine, PhD; m. Thomas N. Byrne (neurooncologist); children: Elizabeth.

Joined faculty of Yale University(1985), named full professor (1994), served as dean of its Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (1889–2002), then provost (2002); became president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2004), the 1st woman and 1st life scientist to hold that post.
